Alienware M17

alienware-m17Alienware M17 is the latest laptop from this great PC gaming company. It features ATI video cards (yes, it includes multi-GPU Crossfire X) and also comes with Intel Quad Core 2 Extreme CPU’s. These options do drive up the price a bit, but the basic version starts from $1,399.

Despite the recent redesign of Alienware laptops, this model stays with the old chassis.

To give you an example of a test system, an M17 can have a 1,920×1,200 display, 3GB of RAM, dual ATI Radeon HD 3870 cards, a 7,200 rpm 160GB drive, and all this costs $1,999.

According to some tests, this model looks good, offers great value for the money, is built on the latest Centrino 2 technology and works great in games. The downsides are the 7.5 lbs weight and the battery life, which lasts between 1.5 and 2.5 hours.

BenQ’s featherweight Joybook Lite U101 is Atom powered

BenQ’s featherweight Joybook Lite U101 is Atom powered

benq-joybook-lite-u101_bVkSA_54
BenQ has been off the hook for a while now, but they have finally collected themselves well in time for the CES, entering the laptop fray with their latest Joybook Lite U101. Weighing at about 1 kg, the U101 is aimed as a second notebook for the vivid user. It packs a 10.1” 16:9 WSVGA LED backlit screen supporting 1024 x 600 resolutions.

This not so big notebook is powered by a 1.6GHz Atom processor for higher energy efficiency and extended battery life which is made possible with SSD-driven, three-cell battery. Joybook Lite U101 is expected to be made available by the 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2009, with either Linux® or Windows® OS, 1.3MP webcam, WiFi and optional 3.75G HSUPA and Bluetooth.

Press release:

LAS VEGAS, NV January 8, 2009 – BenQ announced today the official launch of their new Joybook Lite Series with the introduction of the very first model, the Lite U101. Targeting those who mainly use the Internet for social networking and personal communication, the U101 is engineered for optimum multimedia sight, sound, and play all in an ultra-portable form factor. At around 1 kg^, it packs heavyweight Internet entertainment with a brilliant 10.1” 16:9 WSVGA LED backlit screen, 8ms response time, and smart conveniences for unbridled web browsing, video chatting, and every imaginable Internet activity. A generously sized keyboard (90% of full-size qwerty), optional 3.75G HSUPA*, plus notable features and cool styling place this netbook ahead of the competition.

“The way consumers use the Internet has evolved tremendously to where it has become a personal extension of themselves via blogging, networking, video sharing and shopping. The Internet is now a personal pastime and the U101 perfectly fits the budget, style, and interests of those enthusiasts,” said Peter Chen, GM of BenQ Technology Product Center. “It delivers everything they need to enjoy the Internet at an affordable value with take-anywhere portability.”

Positioned as a second notebook for avid Internet users whose main web activities focus on personal style and individuality, the U101 places equal value on aesthetics and technology. The lid is covered in an Emoticon design (available in sapphire blue, shimmery black, pearly white, or rosy pink**) which appears as an orderly grid of small patterns. Upon close look, one is intrigued by various lively emoticons (a combination of symbols and letters that have become an international language in the Internet world), all derived from the phrase: “I ♥ Joybook Lite.” The emoticon motif captures the very essence of today’s Internet user, enabling self-expression through the product’s trendy cool style as well as with its net-centric functionality.

At around one kilogram^, the U101 is smaller than most netbooks, yet it offers more benefits: a dual-drive supported memory capacity to give you the massive storage capacity of HDD and the stability of SSD, a more comfortably- sized keyboard (90% of the full-size qwerty), longer battery life, and a bigger 10.1” LED WSVGA 16:9 screen that displays HD movies in their native format without annoying black bars. Plus, the U101 enables full enjoyment of the World Wide Web with wider coverage at faster speed via WiFi and optional 3.75G HSUPA and Bluetooth®*. Sharing videos and photos is effortless, spontaneous, and crystal-clear with a high-resolution 1.3MP webcam (with WebCam® Companion® and Magic-i®), built-in 1.5-watt speakers, VoIP, and integrated microphone. A highly intuitive and customizable GUI (available on the Linux® OS) adds fun and personality to operation.

As Intel’s tiniest and least power-consuming processor, the all new hafnium-infused Intel® Atom™ Processor powers the U101 with higher energy efficiency and extended battery life, all while still supporting full Internet capabilities. When it is SSD-driven, the included three-cell battery, engineered with the latest power-conserving technology, lasts an unsurpassed four hours. A six-cell battery will be available for purchase at a later date.

Apple Apple MacBook

Full review of Macbook Air

Apple defined what a music player must be. It defined what a smartphone should do. And now the company could be setting the bar, very high again, for what an ultraportable laptop should be like with its MacBook Air. All within less than an inch of metal, 3 pounds of total mass, and the starting price tag of $1,799, Apple has managed to deliver what all consumers have come to expect from their laptops, and much more.

The 13.3-inch backlit LED display does not compromise on resolution (1280x800) or performance. The keyboard is full-sized. The battery doesn't weigh the Air down, yet still motors on for as long as five hours. And somehow in its narrow confines, the MacBook has room for an iSight camera as well.

And then there's the innovation that we've all come to expect from Apple. The trackpad features Apple's multi-touch input, made famous by iPhones, where you can pinch and spread your fingers to zoom in and out of your display. Then there's an innovation truly MacBook Air: the laptop has no optical drive and instead forces you to rely on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to backup files on Time Machine, download music and movies, and communicate with others.

Its environmental advances will become industry standard and are numerous enough to deserve their own article.

"No optical drive?!" you might be able to hear an old-timer choking in panic and disbelief, unable to get over the previous paragraph. "How can I upload a driver or a new app, huh, huh, huh!?"

MacBook Air has this covered. Say you need to install a driver via a CD. The laptop has what's called Remote Disc, a wireless process that allows your Air to "borrow" the optical drive of a nearby computer with a drive. It's so freaky it's almost parasitic.

But it's progress, right? Sort of like the advanced human life forms that will thousands of years from now whose brains will be five times as big as ours and whose bodies are lifeless, useless spleen-like appendages.

But I digress. Back to the MacBook Air. If there ever was a weakness, it could be its 80GB of hard drive. A quieter 64GB solid state drive is optional as well as an external USB SuperDrive. Or the built-in mono speaker. But am I being picky here?

Otherwise, the hardware in this 3-pound package is Apple up-to-snuff. A 1.6-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo is standard, with 1.8 optional. The RAM is a standard 2GB.

Perhaps you'll never look at your old ultraportable the same way again.

Macbook Air Technical Specifications

  • Processor 1.6-1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 800 MHz FSB

Asus M70sa

Full review of Asus M70sa

Meet the next 17" DTR / multimedia system from Asus - the M70, which features the ATI HD3650 video card with 1gb of Video Ram, a Full HD display, and 1TB of hard drive space, and measuring in at 16.2" x 11.8" x 1.7" and weighing in just over 8 pounds with it's 9 cell battery. Get ready for a bit of a workout, this thing is large and in charge!

Opening up the glossy piano black LCD blessed by a 1.3mp webcam, you'll find the keyboard, which is very decent, with a tactile matte like finish, and full number pad, which helps with 10 key entry, or simple number entry. There is a 4 dedicated shortcut keys above the keyboard including the "instant fun" button, but it isn't really that instant, and only provides the media center in vista.

The Trackpad on the M70 looks the part, and then some. It features backlit hot touch area's that are enabled by tapping the function MODE area, then tapping the associated backlit area. Volume, backlighting, play, pause, next can be controlled by simply hitting the specific areas and is a nice feature to have as a multimedia notebook. The 5 speakers on the M70sa are well appointed Altec Lansing speakers with that funky dedicated woofer on the bottom of the unit. Chrome surrounds all except the most front speakers on the M70, and the sub helped fill in the lower-midtones

Features and Performance The M70 is definately not a simple mans machine, it features nearly every connection you will need, like: IR port, integrated TV tuner port, 4 USB 2.0 ports, mini-firewire port, SD card slot, Express Card slot, wireless on/off switch, audio in/out/spdif, and a Blu-Ray 2x drive sitting in the compartment to the left as well. But that's not it! The rear of the unit is actually pretty decked out as well with an AV input, HDMI output, E-Sata connector, RGB output, modem, Ethernet, and lockslot.

Gaming performance was decent, although not mind blowing - since the HD3650 uses slower DDR2 memory and slower clock speeds and finicky drivers - it did feel a little anemic playing on high settings on popular games, but otherwise for video, photo, or simple TV it performed very well.

The M70sa also comes with a carrying bag, USB mouse, HD tuner antenna, and that sweet accident protection program.

Asus M70sa Technical Specifications

  • 1 TB hard drive (2 500gb into 4 x 250gb partitions)

Asus G50VT

Full review of Asus G50VT

Dedicated gaming laptops are not that common, and for good reason; the hardware required to play high-end games takes up a fair amount of space, the components require more power - resulting in shorter battery life, and they are usually very pricey. Our review sample however, is an exception to the last rule, as it's the Best Buy edition of the Asus G50vt - more specifically named G50 VT-X1.

It's equipped with a somewhat slower Core 2 Duo processor than the regular model and you will have to settle for one hard drive instead of two, but it still has the most important component from a gamer's perspective, and that would of course be the Nvidia 9800M graphics card.

At 7.3 pounds, the G50 is quite heavy for a 15" laptop, but considering that most laptops with these specs come in 17-inch frames, it's actually a "thin and light" gaming laptop (relatively speaking).

If the funky patterns and LED lights aren't enough to hint at this being a gaming laptop, the "Republic of Gamers" logo might. For some the design might stand out a bit too much, but it clearly has a lot of personality.

Gaming Performance and Benchmarks

But let's move on to the important parts of the test: benchmarks and gaming performance. The Vista Experience Index has never felt entirely relevant, especially on newer models, as the score often maxes out at 5.9. Our G50 actually scored a 5.9 on everything but the CPU, which stayed at 5.2. In PCMark Vantage it got 3935 points, and in 3DMark Vantage E8541 - both very impressive figures.

To try out some games, we fired up Crysis, Unreal Tournament 3 and FEAR. All of them were fully playable of course. FEAR delivered an average framerate of 45 FPS on high detail settings and 1024x768. UT 3 was no problem either - the framerate stayed between 50-60 FPS with fully maxed out settings. Crysis presented more of a challenge. To achieve comfortable framerates we had to turn the settings down to 1024x768 and medium quality to get around 33 FPS.

Asus also provides a utility to do some "extreme overclocking." This only applies to the CPU and doesn't affect gaming performance by much, however. We noticed an increase of about 2 frames per second with the utility turned on.

All things considered, the G50VT X1 is a great laptop for gamers on a budget. The only issue we had was with the LCD, which didn't provide high enough resolution and had slightly washed-out colors.

Asus G50VT Technical Specifications

  • Processor 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • Memory 4GB DDR2
  • Harddrive 320GB
  • OS Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Weight 7.3 lbs
  • Screen 15.6
  • Screen resolution 1368x768
  • Graphic Card Nvidia 9800M GS
  • Battery Life 1.5-2 hrs

Pros

  • Great Performance
  • 9800M GPU
  • Very Affordable

Cons

  • Disappointing LCD
  • Poor Battery Life

Acer Ferrari 1000

Full review of Acer Ferrari 1000

Acer sponsorship of the Scuderia Ferrari racing team brings the compact Acer Ferrari 1000 Laptop. Featuring Carbon Fiber lid, fierce candy red trim, and the speed-invoking Ferrari logo. The similarities do not stop at the exterior, as the Ferrari 1000 is filled with power, thanks to its AMD Turion Dual Core chip and 768 MB RAM. Light weight, it weighs four pounds (3.85 lb.) and with a thickness of only 1.36 inches means its designed for portability.

Design

Classified as an ultra-portable, taking this laptop out and about is a pleasure thanks to its small size and light weight. To help reduce size and weight on the Ferrari 1000, an integrated optical was excluded, instead comes with an external optical drive. Opening the laptop was designed to make you feel as if youve entered the cockpit of a supercar. Starting with the Carbon Fiber lid, it is flanked by red trim and has a distinct logo adorning the center.

Features and Performance

Powered by AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 dual core processor, this CPU sports a 2x512KB L2 cache, runs on an 1800 MHz HyperTransport Bus, and is built on a 90nm manufacturing process. Maximum power dissipation (Thermal Design Power, TDP) of the TL models is at 35W. ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 chipset equips an integrated graphics. Not to mention, 768MB DDR2 667MHz RAM and supports up to 4GB RAM and a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (ST9160821AS) 160GB 5400RPM 8MB cache SATA drive.

Lets get to more goods: the vibrant 12.1-inch WXGA (1280 x 800 native resolution) widescreen display with Acer CrystalBrite high-brightness LCD and with LED backlight. It enhances the viewing experience, as color and contrast are much more rich and vibrant. Viewing angles were respectable and color inversing was minimal.

Attached within the LCD panel-mounted is a 1.3 megapixel camera located above the display. You also get Acer VisageON software, which tracks 22 points of the users face so it to remains centered in the frame.

The Ferrari 1000 came with two batteries: one 6-cell rated at 4800 mAh and one 3-cell rated at 2000 mAh. The larger 6-cell capacity battery protrudes from the rear of the machine but the 3-cell does not. Overall battery life with the 6-cell isnt that great.

Recommendation:

The Acer Ferrari 1000 is stylish, feature rich and and is plenty fast but there is a caveat. For a 12-inch ultraportable, it is heavy. Battery life stinks, and the optical drive is external (which could be a pro or con). Gamers need to look elsewhere for their gaming delight and try the M1330 instead. Instead, users who opt for this machine will appreciate the slick Ferrari styling and great performance. While its bigger brother, the Acer Ferrari 5005 outperforms the 1000 in almost every respect, the Ferrari 1000 is tailored for a different audience. If you must have the Ferrari styling and prefer a lightweight stylish machine, then the Ferrari 1000 could be a good choice for you.

Alienware m15x Gaming Laptop

Full review of Alienware m15x Gaming Laptop

Enclosed in a silvery design that attempts to mimic a space ship from out of this world, the Alienware m15x doesnt look anything completely striking. In fact, it seems Alienware wanted to maintain a more conservative look with the m15x than their typical offshoot Alien-looking design found in the past. In terms of build-quality, the m15x faces creaks and groans. If one moved the lid, even before the lid angle is adjusted, it emits a creaky staircase noise. Even worse, it doesn't make much difference where you grip the lid.

One striking new feature is the the 86-key keyboard that emits a blue LED light that surrounds each key. Typing on the keyboard is excellent, while keeping perfect key travel and ample space for large hands. However, flex evident as we noticed a fair amount of keyboard flex, but only to the dead center of the keyboard.

Moving on is the astounding 15.4-inch display with a native resolution at 1920x1200. Yes, that means: WUXGA! That is plenty enough pixels per inch. Although we did notice the monitor seemed to produce a softer image than most displays at this resolution. However, this may be a better thing because it made it easier to stare at the screen for longer periods of time.

The Alienware m15x weighs in at 7 pounds and can increase or decrease depending what drive you insert in the hot swappable Smart bay: 2x Blu-ray Disc Burner, secondary 300 GB hard drive, or an extra Li-Ion battery.

In terms of connectivity, its fully loaded. And we mean fully loaded. Youll get latest internal Intel a/b/g/n wireless card, Gigabit Ethernet port, three USB 2.0 ports, connections for both headphones and microphone, Firewire B, HDMI, ExpressCard and 7-in-1 media card reader. Inside the space ship, the m15x is powered by the high-end NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX video card with 512 MB of discrete memory. This offers a strong performance punch, but can really suck yourbattery dry like an icy-cold lemonade on a hot summer day.

Luckily, Alienware included a feature called BinaryGFX which can enable video to run off of integrated memory only, really saving you some battery time on those long business journeys. Feeling colorful? Bundled is the AlienFX technology (available through the Command Center) allows you to change the color of the lid border, keyboard, touchpad border, and all associated lights (Blue or Red) depending on what program you're running.

Recommendation

Combined with the powerful Core2Duo Xtreme processor with a speedy 512 MB 8800m GTX video card and 4 GB of RAM, this machine simply screams in power. With that, carries some baggage. The base machine will cost you $1,799 and our model with all the bells & whistles comes to a close $4,808.00. Granted our m15x came with all the extras, like a secondary hard drive, Blu-ray disc burner, and an extra battery. We love the addition of an HDMI port for home theater connection. So, if you want the market a high-class gaming laptop -have money to spend, and love the new Alienware design, this is an excellent purchase. Buy me one too.

Toshiba L350

Full review of Toshiba L350

Meet Toshiba's L350 laptop computer from their Satellite Pro lineup. It is a budget computer for today's business professional promoting all the features you need, without the fuss and flair of much more.

Our unit weighed in at about nine and a half pounds, fifteen inches across and roughly two inches thick, this laptop is a beast to lug around, and really makes a difference in the style one can mobilize with this amount of weight.

Aesthetically, the machines plastic casing with a dull gray and black finish stress that the L350 is certainly not intended to promote PC envy amongst fellow corporate users.

Features, Performance and Conclusion

The L350 features a full-size keyboard with a number pad and raised black, plastic keys.

Regrettably, this Satellite doesn't come with much of an impressive list for connectivity, but it does match what is needed most by business professionals. Featuring a wireless on/off switch, multi-media card reader mic-in / audio out, and that handy volume knob. There is also a VGA output, Ethernet port, three USB 2.0 ports ExpressCard slot and a standard modem connection.

Performance was very decent, but with integrated Graphics it left something to be desired - another thing to note is this unit comes pre-packaged with the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, which leaves something else to be desired with Vista hitting mainstream acceptance.

At a little over a $1000 purchase price, the Toshiba L350 Satellite Pro may be the laptop for you - if you need a 17 inch budget laptop.

Satellite M305

Full review of Satellite M305

Meet the M305 from Toshiba. It features the new Fusion Finish - a gloss and appeal that makes this laptop seem to fit in a rather more expensive looking niche. The LCD lid is an amazing gloss with chrome letters, and the that treatment is carried straight onto the display as well - with it's 1280x800 display, it seems crisp and vibrant gathering this is only a 14.1 inch display. The keyboard also gets the glossy finish.

The glossy keyboard looks and feels awesome, but gather fingerprints like a dollar menu item after closing time - quick, fast, and there in the morning to remind you of what you ate the night before. But, at least the harmon/kardon speakers that are on either side sound nice, and look the part of it as well.

Lights surround the upper trackpad bezel - and that's about the best thing for the trackpad. It was too small and too unresponsive for our taste. It could be down to drivers, but the trackpad needs vast improvement.

Features, Performance, and Conclusion

The M305 features a standard amount of connectivity for the package. And understanding that this is the more budget friendly line-up for the Toshiba Satellite series; we weren't taken back at this price point. It carries a card slot, standard RGB output, fan, FAKE HDMI output (which leads me to believe other units may poses this function, or at least this chassis will get that upgrade) two USB 2.0 ports, a mini-firewire port and audio out / mic in. It also has an Express card slot tucked above the latter ports, which offer some benefit to using newer technology. The right side of the unit houses the DVD-RW Labelflash drive, another USB 2.0 port, Modem and Ethernet port, along with your standard slot-lock. The rear is really simple, housing only the power jack

Performance was ample enough for Vista Home premium, and with 3GB of Ram, a 250gb 5400rpm hard drive, and a speedy T8100 Core2Duo - applications experienced little to no lag. However, the unit did get a bit warm (due to it's small and restricting chasis) and didn't do well in 3d gaming. But, that's not what it's made for.

The Toshiba Satellite M305 didn't exactly wow me, but it didn't leave me unimpressed. I'd love to see the updated unit with a dedicated graphics. But for under a $1,000, it looks good and performed good. Small is the new big, and this one looks to be pretty decent.

Satellite M305 Technical Specifications

  • Processor 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100
  • Memory 3GB DDR2 RAM

  • Weight 5.2 pounds
  • Screen 14.1 inches
  • Screen resolution 1280x800
  • Graphic Card Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
  • Battery Life 170 minutes

Pros

  • Great style and size
  • Decent Connectivity
  • Price Point
  • Dedicated Volume knob
  • Great Glossy Screen

Cons

  • Weak Graphics option
  • Trackpad needs vast improvement
  • Hefty for it's size

Toshiba Qosmio G45

Full review of Toshiba Qosmio G45

With Blu-ray winning HD format war, Toshiba attempted to release an HD solution in the Qosmio G45 laptop. The laptop comes with a HD-DVD burner as well as a plethora of features to support a theater-like experience starting from the powerful speakers to the razor sharp 17-inch widescreen display Large and in charge, the Qosmio G45 comes with a black-piano finish lid that contrasts the white keyboard. Although the aesthetic design is quite impressive, picking up the laptop isnt quite impressive. The laptop weighs in at a massive 10 pounds, which will either break your back or enlarge your biceps.

Features

The Toshiba Qosmio G45 comes with everything youd expect in a multimedia machine. HDMI-in and HDMI-out, ExpressCard slot, Memory Card slot Firewire, USB 2.0, audio ports (line-in, microphone, headphone, and S/P DIF out), LAN, S-Video, DVI, power and ports for infrared remote controls. It also comes with Bluetooth 2.0 and 802.11 a/g/n. Phew! The most distinctive feature is the vibrant 1080p 17-inch Widescreen display capable of 1920x1200 resolution. What does this mean? HD quality video. Powered by GeForce 8600M graphics card, it supports for HDCP (HDMI output) and integrated HDTV encoder for 1080i/1080p TV content. Of course, having great video wont be a complete entertainment experience with great sound. Built with 4 Harman/kardon speakers coupled with 1 Bass Reflex sub-woofer, this surround sound setup produces great sound when watching movies or digital cable.

Whether youll be gaming or watching HD-DVD movies, the G45 performed effectively with only a few minor slowdowns, which didnt deter from the overall movie experience. In everyday tasks, from word processing, surfing the internet and the photo-editing, the G45 will do everything pretty well, thanks in part to the abundant 3GB RAM, which is the only upgradeable component of this laptop. The battery performance when watching a movie was dismal - lasting only half of Batman Begins on HD-DVD. The battery depleted after 1:14 into the movie with full brightness and sound on. Be sure to keep a spare battery or be near an outlet when watching movies. Otherwise, the battery performance was around 2 hours under normal, everyday use. If you need a power laptop capable of HD entertainment, Photoshop, or gaming, this unit is for you. If you plan on traveling, you probably want to opt for another system as its mediocre battery life and weight is made for the desk (or living room) and no where else.

Toshiba Qosmio G45 Technical Specifications

  • Processor Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz
  • Memory 3GB DDR2 RAM
  • Harddrive 320GB

  • Screen 17-inch
  • Screen resolution 1920x1200
  • Graphic Card Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT 512MB
  • Battery Life 2 hours

Pros

  • Great everyday performance
  • Good gaming performance
  • HD-capable laptop
  • Good sound for a laptop
  • Lots of connectivity options
  • Black piano chassis
  • Giant 17-inch 1080p display

Fujitsu U810 Ultraportable Tablet

Full review of Fujitsu U810 Ultraportable Tablet

Laptop + Ultra Mobile PC + Tablet = Fujitsu LifeBook U810. Think this mini-sub-tablet Ultra Mobile PC laptop as the Swiss army knife of ultra portable computing. This little thing has a functional keyboard that can flip the screen that becomes a tablet with full touch-screen capabilities. Weighing only 1.56lbs and measuring 6.75-in x 6-in x 1-in, the Lifebook U810 is certainly is absolutely tiny, especially when you consider its a fully Vista-capable computer running inside.

The U810 can turn into 3 setups: laptop, tablet, or UMPC modes. Swivel and flip the screen over, and the device can be used as a UMPC (Ultra mobile portable computer). You can pull out the stylus and use it as a portable tablet. For a tiny machine, expect a tiny 56-key QWERTY keyboard that you can (barely) use if you find you need to type as a laptop. As you may expect, due to the size, its missing a lot key connection ports like: VGA output, expansion slots, and a half dozen USB ports. Instead, youll get one USB 2.0 port, SD media slot AND Compact Flash slots on either sides, a connection port to connect a Fujitsus Ethernet dongle and accessories. The remaining ports include the charger, headphone and microphone ports.

Intels mobile A110 processor found in other mobile devices (Smart phones and UMPCS) and runs at a modest 800MHz coupled with the Intel 945 chipset. Also includes 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 4200RPM 40GB hard drive. The 5.6-inch LCD screen (1024 x 600) is a sharp little glossy display with accurate touch-screen functionality that gives the imot plenty of flexibility to work with. Feel free to swivel and rotate the screen. Thankfully, the U810 is able to offer 802.11a/b/g WiFi, a finger-print access, and built-in webcam.

Performance

The Fujitsu comes pre-installed with Microsoft Vista. What does that mean? The load times are downright atrocious, taking up to 2 minutes to get to the desktop screen when powering up. Its so slow that by the time Vista is fully ready to use, you already feel like the computer has already drained half the battery. However, things run much better as we noticed no slow down in web browsing and general desktop usages. The Fujitsu U810 managed only an average 3 hours of battery time running mixed video, web browsing, and data entry. Thats very disappointing for a machine of this size.

Conclusion

All all in one portable machine designed to offer mobile users to work, its certainly not perfect. With the lack of some ports and poor performance, its not ideal for users who demand power. Rather, its designed for casual users who need more than just a PDA. For those looking for a versatile portable computer, this is worth it. But if you dont mind having something bigger, go for a real tablet PC or ultra-portable laptop.

  • Graphic Card Mobile Intel Express 945GM

  • Best-in-class UMPC keyboard
  • Tablet and touch-screen capabilities
  • Well thought-out ergonomics and controls
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, fingerprint scanner, and webcam come standard

Lenovo ThinkPad X200

Full review of Lenovo ThinkPad X200

Thin and light is in. The new Lenovo ThinkPad X200 is the newest ultraportable designed to replace the ThinkPad X61 ultra-portable. A little brother to the 13.3-inch ThinkPad X300, the X200 encompasses elements of both machines in a lightweight package. Incorporating Intels newest Montevina platform, the Thinkpad X200 features Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 clocked at a speedy 2.4GHz with 3MB L2 cache and a low 25 TDP power consumption.

With respect to design, the ThinkPad X200 maintains the conservative black rubber finish built in a rugged chassis. Weighing in at only 2.95 pounds with the 4-cell battery, the ThinkPad X200 is designed for mobility. Our unit came with 9-cell battery which offered over twice the battery life but protrudes from the rear and adds additional weight. The 12.1-inch widescreen display features 1280x800 resolution with 16:10 aspect ratio. Overall, the display is nice to the eyes. Viewing angles are adequate and display-brightness is sufficiently lit. With a thin and light machine, the Thinkpad X200 omits an optical drive. Instead, you're welcome to order an external USB 2.0 DVD drive (like the MacBook Air). In terms of the ports, this thin and light machine offers: 3 USB ports, monitor-out, Gigabit Ethernet, ExpressCard 54mm slot, Bluetooth and WLAN. There is an option for 1 media reader, or an SD card slot. Lenovo allows you to upgrade its hard drive up to 320GB capacity or 64GB Solid State Disk (SSD).

Some new stand-out features we should mention: spill flow keyboard, biometric finger print reader, LED light for dark environments, Webcam, ability to connect to GPS WWAN services from Verizon, Vodafone, or Telus. Battery Performance With our 9-cell battery, we were ecstatic to operate the machine for approximately 8 hours and 47 minutes. You read right. Normal usage of web surfing, word processing, and listening to music.

Conclusion

The Thinkpad X200 will serve a specific audience: mobile professionals who demand power and portability. The X200 fills this void without a doubt, offering excellent battery life and power under the hood that matches most mid-size entertainment laptops twice its size. Although the X200 isnt like the X300, its more affordable The ThinkPad X200 is a welcome improvement over the popular X61 series.

Sony VAIO Z

Full review of Sony VAIO Z

We haven't reviewed the Sony VAIO Z laptop yet - the following is a summary based on the hardware in the VAIO Z series.

Summary and Information

The VAIO Z series is one of Sony's premium ultraportable series, and is priced accordingly. Like most VAIOs it comes with a little extra, such as a high-resolution 'X-BRITE' LED-lit screen, a Blu-Ray player and dedicated graphics.

It's neither the thinnest or lightest laptop, like for instance the MacBook Air or the Lenovo X301, but makes up for it by using more powerful hardware. For example, the VAIO Z is equipped with the regular, higher clocked Core 2 Duo's, whereas its thinner competition use low-voltage CPUs. It even has a dedicated graphics card to help with the HD media playback and provide some light gaming capability, which is unusual in this weight category.

An optional upgrade that should make this laptop incredibly fast is the dual-SSD RAID configuration. This gives it almost double the performance of the already fast and completely silent Solid State Drive technology. Coincidentally, it also doubles the price tag - but hey, if you want the fastest laptop on the planet, I'm sure you don't expect it to be cheap.

Sony VAIO Z Technical Specifications

  • Processor 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile P9500
  • Memory 3GB DDR3
  • Harddrive 2x64GB SSD
  • OS Windows Vista Business
  • Weight 3.31 lbs
  • Screen 13.1
  • Screen resolution 1366 x 768 (WXGA)
  • Graphic Card NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS

Pros

  • Dedicated 9300M Graphics
  • Optional Dual SSD Configuration

Cons

  • Expensive

Apple MacBook

Full review of Apple MacBook

For starters, a fair share of the new MacBook's circuitry comes from Nvidia instead of Intel. Most notably the 9400M integrated graphics, which is a big step up from the Intel X3100 found in the white MacBook. Apple claims it has five times the performance over the Intel IGP, but in the real world the difference is actually even more significant - the 9400M lets you to play some recent games whereas the old and tired Intel X3100 certainly does not.

Design

As far as the new design goes, this is arguably the best looking laptop since the Osborne 1. The no-doubt well paid broilers at Apple's design department have done an awesome job with the new "unibody" construction, allegedly made from a single piece of aluminum.

To get completely in line with an otherwise minimalistic design, they also decided to let go of the trackpad button altogether, opting for one built into the glass trackpad itself. Thanks to the multi-touch functionality, this works very well - actually there's no need to use the built-in button at all. The new four-finger gestures to bring down Expose and Spaces are also well implemented.

Connectivity

Unfortunately, they didn't bother to drill a lot of holes in that single piece of aluminum. There's not a single FireWire port to be found, which is bound to feel like a betrayal to many diehard Mac users with a room full of FireWire accessories. On top of that it only has a measly two USB ports and Apple's proprietary Mini DisplayPort, so forget about using your external monitor unless you fork over an additional $29 for a standard VGA or DVI adapter, or $99 (!) for the dual-link DVI adapter.

The new MacBook is available in two varieties (so far): one 2.0GHz version (our review sample) and a more expensive 2.4GHz model with a larger hard drive and backlit keyboard. Both models come with the same Nvidia chipset, a LED-backlit screen, and 2 gigs of top-of-the-line 1066MHz DDR3 RAM. It's worth mentioning that the hard drives that ship with the new MacBooks are very well isolated and silent. When the laptop is idle or doing light tasks like web browsing, it's almost inaudible.

Performance and Games

Thanks to the DDR3 memory, a 1066MHz front side bus, and the Nvidia chipset, the new MacBooks are faster than older models at the same CPU clock speed. Our 2.0GHz MacBook generated an Xbench score of 166.40. It is also perfectly capable of playing some games - WoW delivered fully playable framerates (50-60 fps) at high settings, which is to be expected from an aging game, but even Call of Duty 4 was playable with the settings tuned down a little. Apple promised five hours of battery life, which we found to be a little too optimistic, but the 4.5 hours we managed to squeeze out of it is still very good.

Overall, the aluminum MacBook is an excellent laptop. Although it's somewhat more expensive than we had hoped, you get a solid and great-looking laptop, and some features that you'll never find in a similar PC.

Acer Aspire One

Full review of Acer Aspire One

The Aspire One is an 8.9" netbook with an Intel Atom N270 processor and GMA950 integrated graphics just like every other netbook out there. With identical hardware, you would assume to get roughly the same performance out of it, and you would assume correctly.

Features

There is still a measure of variation between different netbooks and brands, most notably the appearance, but quality aspects are naturally also important, as well as connectivity, hard drive, RAM and battery size.

Regarding the last item in the list, we managed to find the desirable and elusive model with the 6-cell battery, which offered 5 hours and 40 minutes of battery life with wireless on and backlight set to 75%. It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that the 3-cell, which is more common, would yield about half of that.

Big for a Netbook

Of course, getting the larger battery also means sacrificing some portability. The Aspire One is actually a bit large already (as far as netbooks go), and the 6-cell battery increases the weight to roughly 2.5 pounds. Another minor annoyance with the Acer is the relatively wide and thick bezel that makes it even slightly larger than some 10-inch netbooks.

That annoyingly large LCD bezel is unfortunately not the only letdown as far as the screen is concerned. Its viewing angles are also very poor - colors start shifting as soon as you're not exactly in front of the screen.

Bottom Line

You also get varying amounts of RAM and hard drive (or SSD) space depending on which version you get. The Aspire One is available with both flash memory-based Solid State Drives in smaller sizes and regular notebook hard drives. Our review model had 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive - both quite generous for a netbook. In most aspects, you actually get a lot of "bang for the buck" with the Aspire One.

On the whole it's a reasonably well-rounded netbook that - like most netbooks - offer few surprises. Considering what you have to pay for it, it's hard not to recommend this netbook in spite of a few flaws.

Acer Aspire One Technical Specifications

  • Processor Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz
  • Memory 1GB
  • Harddrive 160GB
  • OS Windows XP Home
  • Weight 2.2 lbs
  • Screen 8.9
  • Screen resolution 1024 x 600
  • Graphic Card Intel Graphics Media Accelerator
  • Battery Life 3 hours

Pros

  • Looks Pretty
  • Very Affordable
  • Comfortable Keyboard

Cons

  • Poor Viewing Angles
  • Relatively Large for a Netbook

Dell Latitude E6400

Full review of Dell Latitude E6400

Full review is currently not available. Check back again, as we are in the process of updating our review database.

Summary and Information

The old grey magnesium-alloy casing was updated with a surprisingly fresh design. Some of them, including the E6400 are even available in fancy colors. Hence, now even corporate users get a chance to get a laptop in 'Regatta Blue', 'Regal Red', or 'Quartz Pink'.

The E6400 is the most popular 14" model with a choice of processors from Intel's Centrino 2 lineup, professional grade Nvidia graphics, and several new security features. Dell claims that you should be able to squeeze up to 19 hours of battery life out of this one, but to achieve this you have to configure it with the 9-cell battery, a pricey Solid State Drive, and an additional battery slice.

You can get this model and others from the Latitude E series with either Vista or ironically, pay extra for a Windows XP downgrade. The optional graphics card, Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M, roughly equals the 9300M consumer GPU, but should perform somewhat better thanks to a higher clock.

Dell Latitude E6400 Technical Specifications

  • Processor 2.40GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

HP EliteBook 6930p

Full review of HP EliteBook 6930p

Full review of the EliteBook 6930p is currently unavailable.

Summary and Information
